Ignition
An ignition system is a system for igniting a fuel-air mixture. It is best known in the field of internal combustion engines but also has other applications, e.g. in oil-fired and gas-fired boilers. The earliest internal combustion engines used a flame, or a heated tube, for ignition but these were quickly replaced by systems using an electric spark.

Coils
The factory coil packs contained within the IDI ignition system of the LD9 leave much to be desired. Although individuals upgrade their fuel delivery and air induction, many neglect to enhance their ignition power. With high compression or boost pressure, a stronger spark is required to prevent spark blowout and misfiring at high airflow levels. The MSD #8224 ignition coils serve as an easy replacement to the factory coil pack housing and components within, and provide a far more powerful spark. These coils are readily available at local auto parts retailers such as AutoZone.

Spark Plugs
For the LD9 engine, NGK TR55 plugs are recommended for maximum conductivity and performance. For boosted and nitrous applications, NGK TR6 (#4177) are recommended, as they are one step colder to further help prevent pre-ignition and encourage proper plug self-cleaning abilities.
